How to Sing Rock

The genre of rock music first became popular in the 1950’s and continues to be so today. Many rock groups consist of an electric guitarist, lead singer bass guitarist and a drummer and if you want to be in such a group you will have to know how to sing rock.

Many rock groups consist of fewer players so often you need to be able to play an instrument as well as sing so it is very handy if you know how to sing rock.

With rock (as with all popular types of singing) the emphasis is on personality – you need to ad your own personality to the songs you are singing. If you want to sing rock it is important that you have a good microphone technique and experimentation is necessary so that you can figure out the proper distance from your mouth to the microphone in order to ensure that your voice sounds right when used in combination with the `mic.

A good tip that you should follow is that when you want more intensified contact when singing an intimate song you want to hold the microphone close to your mouth but on the flipside, when you are singing high or loud notes it is important that the microphone is held further away from your mouth – the sound will be much more powerful then.

Rock songs are usually learned from “lead sheets’’ on which only the melody line is given and the letter names for chords indicated – this is so you can add your own little bit of individuality to the piece while you are up there on the stage (and instrumentalists are free to improvise too).

Currently, rock songs and sounds that are selling best require men to sing the head and falsetto registers and women to sing primarily in the chest and middle registers.

The good thing about singing rock and pop is that you will often be able to sing higher or lower than you would be able to in other musical genres such as classical or theater singing.

You should have no trouble in singing rock songs because in general as a singer you should be able to vocalize over at least a three-octave range, you should have no problem if you pay attention to all other aspects of vocal production. However, if problems arise when you attempt to sing a rock song, the pitches of the melody can be modified to accommodate your vocal capabilities.

If you are still at a miss of how to sing rock then it is a good idea for you to enlist the help of a singing tutor this can come in the form of two forms either a singing teacher or you could purchase a singing program that teaches you step by step how to sing.

Both have their benefits and their drawbacks if you are really serious about learning how to sing and having a singing career then I would suggest getting out the yellow pages and finding a credible tutor.

The main drawback here is the huge costs involved. Therefore my suggestion is to combine lessons from a tutor with an online singing program – there are a lot of them available online and many with sections dedicated to how to sing rock.  Good luck with your singing!
