How to Raise Your Pitch

There are many techniques that you need to master before becoming a professional singer but no other technique is as important as learning how to raise your pitch.

The physical ways you raise your pitch is by contracting your larynx and you also have to raise your diaphragm. To contract your larynx is to narrow your field of sound as you shift your muscles to the higher part of your throat and take a deep breath to raise your diaphragm.

A reverse of that is to lower your pitch – you use your muscles at the lower part of your throat and lower your diaphragm by exhaling the muscles in your throat.

Various vocal techniques also affect pitch such as vibrato and tremolo – a wavering of the voice between two static pitches or notes. Pitch can also be changed by staccato –very short brief notes- so it does not affect the pitch of the staccato notes but affects the pitch of the following notes.

The illusion of pitch movement or pitch change can also be provided by harmonization as demonstrated in a barbershop quartet for example.

c major scaleTrained singers often use scale exercises, for example a full octave ascending scale may be used to tone your pitch into a higher range.

Here, the C Major scale illustrates an exercise that will be sung forwards and backwards to warm the vocal muscles. In regard to singing C major is the easiest scale to sing to.

The most complicated key to sing to is the key of C # because every single note is an accidental (has a sharp or a flat proceeding it). Therefore, the reason C major is best for beginning singers is that it is the only scale with no accidentals.

Things that stop you from being able to raise your pitch: tobacco smoking, asthma or any related respiratory conditions and a general lack of health and well being. Your lung capacity is also a factor when you want to find out how to raise your pitch. Your vocal register is also a variable when rising of pitch is concerned.

Professional singers are accustomed to shifting smoothly into their higher register. For example a tenor may shift to a falsetto register. Professional singers are also masters of practicing their craft as Emory Austin said “some days there won’t be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.’’

Tips on how to raise your pitch:

1. Oxygen – oxygenization before singing.

singorama2. People not only practice scales to extend their range but they also do it to stretch their vocal chords just as an athlete would do before exercise to prevent muscle straining.

3. The confidence of being a singer – the notes that people think that can’t get to – if you would relate a singers range as low/ medium and high where high is the most difficult for the singer to attain. Your method should be to strive to the super high notes rather than the high notes. Take a big leap of faith – this is what most people do wrong- you need to believe in yourself and that you have the ability to succeed.
